Award-Winning Author Touts Wildlife, Fisheries Conservation

Outdoors writer Chester Moore has penned more than 400 magazine articles and 2,000 newspaper stories in the last 14 years. Of those stories he says the ones that are the most important to him represent conservation and the "spirit of the outdoors."

"The beautiful thing about hunting and fishing is that here in America it directly affects the conservation of our natural resources in a wonderful way. Without the money put into conservation via license and stamp fees as well as the excise taxes sportsmen voluntarily set up to come out of sporting goods we are literally taking wildlife and fish populations to a whole new level," Moore said.

Moore's latest project is "Wild Life and Wild Times", a DVD co-produced by Manowar vocalist and master bowhunter education instructor Eric Adams.

"This is something I am very proud of. We took the wonderful spirt of the outdoors we have within us and transferred it to the screen, all the while touting the amazing conservation efforts of those of us who still like to kill and catch our own dinner," Moore said.

One section of the DVD involves catching bull redfish and according to Moore that was an impossibility just 25 years ago.

"The commercial netters had ravaged their populations and conscientious fishermen stepped in and said 'enough is enough'. They set up what is now the Coastal Conservation Association off of banning commercial redfish harvest and now we have thriving populations to the point we are allowed to harvest some of the mature ones," Moore said.

"On film we catch and release seven (and keep one) and have such an amazing time doing this. I have a book out called 'Texas Reds' and to be able to write about and illustrate this amazing conservation achievement is an amazing thing."

Moore's next release is a book called Texas Waterfowl about his favorite hunting passtime.

"I simply crave the waterfowl experience down to my bones. This book is something I am really looking forward to getting out because I think it's something totally different than has ever been done with a duck related book. Plus, I'm giving 20 percent of my royalties to be split between Ducks Unlimited's Texas C.A.R.E. program and their conservation easements in the prairie pothole region," Moore said.
